Types of Unemployment Benefits

Generally speaking, the government offers two types of benefits to unemployed individuals: disaster unemployment assistance (DUA) and reemployment assistance (UIA). The DUA program provides financial aid to those affected by major catastrophes, and eligibility for DUA is based on two factors: a President's declaration of a disaster area, and direct unemployment due to the disaster. "Directly unemployed" means the person was unable to find employment within a reasonable amount of time due to the disaster.

In order to qualify for disaster assistance, the disaster victim must not be eligible for regular unemployment insurance benefits, and he or she must be unable to reach their job site due to the disaster. This includes being unable to work because of damage to their job site, or suffering injury that prevented them from doing their job. Disaster relief also provides assistance to individuals who became the primary support for their family due to the disaster. Disasters can strike at any time, and disaster relief benefits are meant to help these individuals get back on their feet.

The Disaster Unemployment Assistance program also provides a monthly income of up to $600. The UC program covers both regular and extended benefits, such as Unemployment Compensation for Federal Employees (UCFE), Unemployment Compensation for Ex-Servicemembers (UCX), and Short Time Compensation (STC). Moreover, the Self Employment Assistance program also includes Disaster Unemployment Assistance. Both of these programs are designed to help undocumented workers regain financial stability.
